High School Course Requirements

When we make freshman admissions decisions, the strength of each student's high school curriculum is strongly considered. So, if you're trying to decide whether or not to take the advanced class, go for it. It will enhance your academic experience and help you better prepare for your future, in college and in a profession.

You may think about taking the classes with the lightest coursework and the least amount of homework in order to spend the majority of your time with friends and with other activities. But the amount of work and effort you put into challenging courses in high school will pay off. If you do well, you are more likely to earn higher test scores, be accepted into selective colleges and universities, and possibly receive more academic scholarships. It shows that you seek challenges and are willing to work hard if you take challenging courses, even if you receive slightly lower marks, as opposed to earning perfect grades in easier classes.

A transcript that includes challenging courses reflects a student's love of learning, effort to expand his or her mind, and willingness to take a more difficult road to grow academically and mentally.
